TERROIR - VINEYARD

Jean-Luc Baldès is privileged to have charge of a unique estate which spreads over four communes to the west of the town of Cahors: Puy l'Evêque (capital of the Cahors wine region), Vire sur Lot, Floressas and Touzac

Tucked within the bends of the River Lot, the family estate covers nearly 70 hectares (175 acres).

The soil, in terraces of silicious clay and clay-and-limestone, similar to that in the famed Pomerol region, is ideal for the production of wines of Classed Growth status.

For the generations of the future, it is Jean-Luc Baldès ambition to pass on lands which are both respected for their natural variations and worked rigorously to bring out their best.

Overall view of the second and third terraces - magnificent stretches, with particularly favourable outlooks, set around the winery buildings. That the estate is so superbly organised and structured in such a coherent manner is due to the groundwork of seven generations of the Baldès family.

Our best working tool is our land! !

The principal grape variety::

Malbec (also known as Côt or Auxerrois) is planted on 75 % of our total vineyard area. It is the basic stock for Cahors, giving our wine its typicity, its dark red colour, generosity and ability to improve with age.

Complementary varieties::

Le Merlot which brings roundness, fruitiness and bouquet.

Tannat reinforces the qualities of Malbec (it is from the same ampelographic family), and produces wines suitable for lengthy ageing.

The Chardonnay and the Viognier, splendid white grape varieties are planted on our highest east-facing hillsides. Mixed together, they produce an original and unique white Cahors wine.

The Chenin: this complex grape variety is used, as in the Loire Valley, to produce on our highest hillsides a beautiful sweet wine.

The vineyard is cultivated in a traditional manner, with the soil being regularly dug over.

The yield is limited to 45 hectolitres per acre and we have carried out "green harvests" as well as thinning out the leaves for a number of years.

We have a weather station which enables us to predict any development of diseases. So, we treat every diseased vine in a very well thought-out way. Our grapes are picked when perfectly ripe and under excellent sanitary conditions.

Always with an eye on producing wines of ever-higher quality, Jean-Luc Baldès is making big efforts to reorganise the structure of the vineyard.

Today, Clos Triguedina has a larger area than any other vineyard of vines planted at high density (8,000 plants per hectare).

Every year, two hectares are replanted.
